In this work, silicone rubber(SR) dense membrane was made from room temperature vulcanizing silicone rubber. The composite membranes with polyetherimide(PEI), polysulfone(PSf) support membranes such as SR-PEI, SR-PSf were also prepared by nonsolvent induced phase inversion process(NIPI) and dip coating. These silicone polymeric membranes were evaluated in terms of the removal of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) such as chloroform, trichloroethylene(TCE), perchloroethylene(PCE) from water by pervaporation.
The flux and selectivity of SR dense membrane was in the range of 65.3 to 73.6 g/m2h and 317.3 to 2031.2, respectively. And pervaporation property of SR-PEI composite membrane was in the range of 95.8 to 112.4 g/m2h and 309.3 to 2039.3, respectively. The flux and selectivity of SR-PSf composite membrane was in the range of 98.2 to 115.2 g/m2h and 311.9 to 2031.2, respectively. SR-PEI composite membrane showed the best performances among the many silicone polymeric membranes, and has better durability and mechanical strength than SR dense membrane. SR-PEI composite membrane should be a useful candidate for the removal of volatile organic compounds dissolved in water.
Key words: volatile organic compounds, composite membrane, pervaporation
